Thirsty (31.05.19)
Picnic Gallery, London
Fitzsimmons is particularly interested in water: even though it can seem so basic – sweat, tears, thirst, rain – it’s extremely significant and powerful. Water can be emotional, it can be political, and, being made into a product it can become commercial.
The concept of water can also reach so much further than just the material. We often find ourselves using the language of thirst when we talk about our desires. And, advertising can manipulate us by telling us what to be ‘thirsty’ for.
Picnic is delighted to announce Thirsty by Naomi Fitzsimmons, a new video installation exploring the surprisingly complex meanings that surround water, using found footage, adverts and song lyrics, she highlights the absurdity of turning water into a commodity or a political tool.
